Cool COD
Hi just want to say that this looks cool. Are you planning a version for a windows PDA device?
COD on a PDA plate? Probably not.
Hi Spencer, thanks for the comment! There are already many similar programs that have even more features for PDA devices, so there are currently no plans to extend COD to this market. COD was primarily developed to run on PCs enabling the digital Bible to be read globally. The most established English language version was also chosen to broaden its appeal.

Thanks for this DR this is really big I was about to see if I could put it on my PDA then read the above hmmm but will give it a try. I highly recommend it. Only flaw obviously you need to know what you are looking for before you go into it no guessing where the text is from hmmm.

Text chosen
Two questions: 1. What version of the Bible is used? KJV, NIV, RSV or ? 2. Is there a verse/subject search function? Thanks. Bill
Chosen text
Hi Bill,
1. The Bible version is the King James Version (free and placed in the public domain as found on Project Gutenberg www.gutenberg.org - the free electronic library)
2. No there is not a search function in the program. If COD takes off and there is huge interest I may consider making a COD v.2.0 with such a feature.

Thanks for letting me know.
Google search says it could be a corrupt download.
Do the hash sums compute correctly?
Another possibility is because COD's executable is compressed. Sometimes antivirus will generate false positives on compressed executables.

Source
Hi there!
I was Googling around for a downloadable Bible in plain text (I didn't
like the installable versions I found), and came across your project.
Great work! I would've never thought of using pattern replacement to
condense the text - I can't believe how small it is.
I wrote you to ask if you would consider releasing your source code to
the community. It would let us learn from your work (the text
compression) and also help in further COD translations (NIV/NLT/etc).
You could license it under the GPL (Gnu Public License) to protect your
original rights to the code. I believe your work would be of great
benefit to the community.
The reason I ask this is because I am looking at creating an NIV version
(or whatever other 'freely available' versions there are), and with your
source code I could greatly speed up this process. The best way to store
the Bible text is in plain text I think. Just a simple ASCII file (or
perhaps split into a book per file?) for easy searching.
Great job on the compression, and thank-you for releasing the project.
Please consider what I asked, and God bless.

Hi Stephan, thank you for
Hi Stephan, thank you for your comments and interest!
I've not released the code but would consider it after reading the comments posted here.
I used the King James Version out of personal preference, but it would be great to see it in other languages also.
I made notes when building the application about the problems I faced. Over the next few weeks, I will start revising what I went through. I recall at some point I was writing a more technical version of the COD story, and will look that up too for you.
God bless you! ( & thanks for the encouragement there's more to the story than told on this site ;)
ESET smart serurity picks it

Thank you so much, can you please consider making the bible available in other versions/languages (open fonts)also, thanks I downloaded and am keeping in my pendrive, I always pray that God should bless you whenever I use this Bible, thanks Samuel, India

Translate to german
Hi all, my english is not good, so is there an advisement to translate this in german language ?
Have all of you a peacfull und healty year 2009
Stefan
Sorry for my bad english
Danke Schone
Thank you Stefan for your comments!
From what I've read here today I believe it is time to resurrect the COD project, and look at further development.
Stefan by His will there will be a COD version das auf Deutsch.
Forgive me, for my German is far poorer than your English.
God bless you too! :)
Automation + Ambition?
After reading your story about baking the COD fish, I'd like to write a program. What I want to do is automate the process you outlined. I'd like to write open source software that does this. I'd like to create something that will work with *nix, Windows, and Mac. This way, people can create their own COD, with a digital version of the Bible that they have, or have purchased. I'm sure the idea of this is insane, but 8 years ago it was insane to put the Bible plus a viewer on a floppy...
A COD fish baking factory? I'll get my apron... ;)
Hi Everett,
I'd originally envisaged COD developing into a compressing 'module' reader at some point, way, way off in the distant future. Thanks to you, I guess that time has now arrived. ;)
If implemented it would not only mean the Bible, but *all* text documents could be turned into compressed ebooks.
I had looked at a bzip viewing wrapper with search to fulfil the role. What do you think?
This direction is similar to COD's nearest competitor (it fits on a floppy with search - but it's not free, not all in one file, and requires installation)

See their methods here: http://www.eis.com.au/eompress.html
Thanks for the comments & inspiration
...now where's that apron? ;)
Source Code
Would you be interested in releasing the source code? I personally am interested in implementing search (it should be possible in under 150k of compressed binary), although I suppose that other uses exist as well.
Hi BotK - I would consider releasing the source code
Hi BotK
Yes I would now consider releasing the source code.
A search feature is something that the application could do with.
I had done some research into this when doing initial work on COD v2.0
My recollection is hazy but it involved Operational research, and I think I was seeking an particular search algorithm. Other bits I recall...
...To search the Bible quickly the search string must be compressed. Then the compressed search string is run against the compressed Bible text. This ensures a good speed is achieved and that minimum resources are used. Anything else would mean uncompressing large chunks of the Bible, before the search is performed - resulting in a slow search.
Thanks for letting me

I consider myself to be a promoted internet user and can say that your resurce is one of not many I like to come back again and again.
Open Source - Linux Port
I'm impresssed you got your program and the entire Bible down to such a small size! congratulations!
I will look forward to your program's inclusion into many linux distributions for the value it will bring to the community.
many blessings this year!

Hi Brent,
I'm always pleased that others find COD useful, and am glad you have found it to be so.
Yes, the project must move forward.

A SEARCH Function
Hello Stephen,
Many, Many thanks to all who have contributed to COD. I just wish to add to the weight of interest in COD-2 with a Search Function. Then, COD will be on it's way to heaven, as it will have attained PERFECTION. That would be unfortunate for us, because we really NEED this bad boy on earth...
COD2
Hi Jon,
Yes there is a need for COD2.
Having a search function would be a primary addition to the software.
Best Regards,
Denver - COD developer
